PETERBOROUGH MEN OF 7 R NORFOLK
Steven Turner at RAF Wyton 07729 412370 or 01480 52451x3517, LogProc-Str3K@esair.dlo.mod.uk wrote concerning the following Peterborough men of 7 R Norfolk who died 7/8 Aug 1944 in Normandy and are buried in Bayeux War Cemetery, Calvados, France.
'14592141 Pte George Frederick Cocker, 11, The Crescent, Woodston. Died 7 Aug 1944, aged 19, in Normandy. Grave reference XXIII E 8.
5783974 Pte Frank Ernest Lawlor, 16, Fulham Road. Died 7 Aug 1944, aged 21, North Western Europe. Grave reference XXIII E 20.
5780965 Lance Sjt Stanley La Barte Quibell, 20, Eastfield Grove. Died 8 Aug 1944, aged 32, in France. Grave reference XXII D 4.
From the dates it is likely they were all involved in the Orne bridgehead fighting. Does anyone have any more information surrounding their deaths or the Bn’s movements on 7/8 Aug 1944? I have photographed their graves for the site run by Peterborough historian David Grey www.pboro-memorial.com and I would like to add a little more to their histories rather than just the CWGC record.
My intention will be to have a story printed in the Peterborough Evening Telegraph for Jun 07.
Can anyone help ?'

ARTHUR LOOMBE 1940-42
Tom Cleary
wrote with news of Arthur Loombe who served with the R Norfolk Regt 1940 to 1942 and was 90 on 15 Jun 06.
Tom sent a photo of Arthur (called Doug) and some of his mates.
'Doug is the one at the back on the right. I think this was taken during the war somewhere in Germany.
Most, if not all, of the guys he served with are dead now, so he has no contact with anyone from the regiment.'

From Dick CooperDICK COOPER’S MYSTERY PHOTOGRAPH
Dick Cooper, former 2 Pl, A Coy, 1 R Norfolk, (now in Surrey), sent the photograph right, given to him by his former Pl Comd, the late Maj Neil Pullen (obituary in B&C 96 Jun 01). Neil did not know the names of those in the photograph nor recall where it was taken. Dick reckoned the SNCO, with a pipe, wearing what looks like a Korean issue parka, on the left of the offr, is CSgt Mick Fowler. 'He much resembles the SNCO in the mystery photograph in B&C 103 Dec 04, later identified, in B&C 104 Jun 05, by Lt Col John G Jones MBE, as CSgt Mick Fowler.'
A check with that guru on all matters Regimental, Maj John Denny, confirmed that Mick smoked a pipe.
Dick adds: ‘As to where this photograph was taken one can only surmise. I don’t think it is Korea as they are wearing BD with Korea medal ribbons - unless it is a group going on R&R to Tokyo or returning. Could it be The New Territories, Hong Kong, or Cyprus?’

MAJ MICK FOWLER'S OBITUARIES - B&C AND CASTLE 1982
Sadly, a paltry obituary for Maj Mick Fowler appeared in B&C Jan 82, right,  (BMT ie Before My Time !).
However, the Castle Vol 7 no 1, 1982, carried the address, below, by Gen
Jack Dye CBE MC DL.

A son, SSgt Pete Fowler, now serves with Suffolk Army Cadet Force as Det Commander Ipswich Queen’s Royal Lancers.
