David Bellamy in Oudtshoorn, South Africa (a gem of a place! Ed.) telephoned concerning Op Alphonse in Cyprus and the disastrous Paphos Forest fire which claimed the lives of 5 from the ranks of the Norfolks.
It is 50 years since the fire started on 16 Jun 1956. Their names are listed in the Cyprus Honour Roll at www.britains-smallwars.com
He recalls that the CO, Lt Col Read, was known to all, the Brigadier included, as ‘Wing Commander’. (Why? Ed.) David’s father was the pre-war Chief Cashier at a Norfolk Bank and advised a bank clerk, one Jack Dye, that he ought to seek a career in the Army. (Didn’t he do well? - retiring as Maj Gen Jack Dye CBE MC DL,
87 in 2006. Jun 05 photograph right. ['My favourite General': says my wife Janine.})
