5770556 HARRY AMIS who served with 1 Royal Norfolk Regiment in Germany 1945
B&C 104 Jun 05 appealed:
Heather O'Sullivan
wrote on behalf of her mother, Winifred Robinson (maiden name Johns) who unearthed a letter she received from Harry Amis, a soldier to whom she wrote during WW2. They never met. She only ever received one letter from him, dated 20 Apr 1945, in which he said they were ‘2 miles from Bremen, which they hoped to capture soon’. She has always wondered if he died during the battle for Bremen. The Norfolk Editor found no such casualty on the CWG site and has informed Heather.
Very soon after his print copy of B&C 104 arrived,
WO2 Alec Barr informed the Norfolk Editor that Harry served in Gt Yarmouth with A Coy, 4 R Norfolk and had 2 sons. (Thanks Sgt Major. Heather has been informed. Ed.)

Maj Roy Jenns MBE of Peterborough wrote in Jul 05 (modestly omitting any mention of his rank or MBE): ‘While serving as Pl Sgt of 1 Essex MMG Pl, 1951-53 at Minden and Lunenburg, Sgt Harry Amis was posted in as Admin Sgt. He went with the Bn to Korea in 1953, returning to UK in 1954. He was aboard HMT Windrush when it sank in the Med. I believe Harry died in 1964 and his wife Alice in Dec 04. Harry’s nephew, ex-1 R Anglian WO2 Tony Amis, lives in Gt Yarmouth.’ (Wonderful and thanks. Roy has re-subscribed to the B&C and completed a ‘Regimental Form’ giving details of his service. He joined the Home Guard at the age of fifteen and a half, retiring as QM. Ed.)

Sgt ‘Dickie’ Bird with whom he served in Colchester 1948-50.
