REGIMENTAL ANECDOTES
`Old soldiers never die, they just fade away’ may not be true but their priceless memories do fade away. The Late Maj Tom Styles contributed an unparalleled 24 unique pieces between 1995 and his untimely death in 2000.

With the passing of more Old Comrades it is increasingly evident that much Regimental anecdotal history is being lost. The facts and deeds are nobly recorded in worthy tomes but much of the human element, sayings, stories, emotions and opinions of events is often only recollected at Regimental gatherings. These reminiscences and the undocumented informal facets of military life need to be recorded. From pre-war, WW2 and especially the Far East, the Berlin blockade, Korea, Hong Kong, Cyprus, Aden and recent conflicts, please send them in.

ROYAL NORFOLK REGIMENT OFFICERS’ DINNER 2005
Membership is open to officers who wore, or wear, the cap badge of The Norfolk, Royal Norfolk, A (R Norfolk) Coy 6 R Anglian and the A (Norfolk and Suffolk) Coy East of England Regt.
On Fri 3 Jun 05 an informal dinner, chaired by Brian Gunton, was held in the Norfolk Club. Attending (less ranks) were: Brian Aldrich, Peter Bartlett, Alan Birrell, Peter Black, David Clarke, John Denny, Paul Garman, John Garton-Jones, Brian Gunton, Malcolm Henderson, Oliver Prior, John L Raybould, William Reeve, Tony Towell and Richard Winfrey.
Thanks are due to Col Tony Taylor, Area Regimental Secretary, Capt Brian Gunton and the Norfolk Club Secretary, Col Geoffrey Hardaker, for arranging a most successful reunion.

Historically, Gen Jack Dye informs us, the Dinner was held in London the night before The Derby and, latterly, on the first Friday in June, to coincide with the D-Day Landings.
The requirement to pay an annual subscription has been abandoned (some paid nothing and others varying amounts). Please cancel any Bank Standing Orders!
It has been apparent for some years we have lost touch with a number of those eligible to attend. A sterling initiative by Peter Bartlett is to build an e-mail address book of all those who do or could attend, together with those whom for health or other reasons cannot attend but who may like to have a copy of the address book.
It is thought that perhaps about 70% of our target group probably have access to e-mail. This is not intended in any way to subvert the good work and responsibilities of our Regimental Secretary, Col Tony Taylor, but to develop an informal communications network by which individuals and friends can communicate with each other. Also, encouragement can be given to those who do not attend our reunion to give it a try. If you are connected and wish to be added to the e-mail address book (not for publication in the B&C nor on the site), contact Peter Bartlett via the Norfolk Section Editor.
The next dinner is on Fri 2 Jun 06 in the Norfolk club,
7.30 for 8 pm.

MV GEORGIC REUNION SAT 13 AUG 05
Following the Independence of India on 15 Aug 1947, the 2nd Bn The Royal Norfolk Regt were the first British Infantry Bn to leave India. They left aboard the MV Georgic bound for the UK and eventual disbandment of the Bn in Mar 48.
An article on the departure appeared in B&C 88 Jun 97.
To commemorate the occasion, The ‘Independence of India 1947 Club’ met on Sat 13 Aug 05 at The Union Jack Club in London. The Norfolk Editor was most honoured to be invited as a guest.
His connections to this august body (no pun intended) were scant - a small boy, aged but 4 when 2 R Norfolk embarked from Bombay in Aug 1947.

ROYAL NORFOLK REGIMENTAL ASSOCIATION DRINKS RECEPTION AND DINNER SAT 24 SEP 2005
Prior to the Sat 24 Sep 2005 Regimental Association Drinks Reception and Dinner at The TA Centre, 325 Aylsham Rd, Norwich, on Fri 23 Sep 05 it was a 3-line-whip at the Aylsham Road TA Centre to set up the Drill Hall for the Regimental Assocn Dinner on Sat 24 Sep 05. Making a surprise appearance (we have only seen him at 3 meetings since October 2004) was our Treasurer. For once, he was not away ‘playing soldiers’, swanning ‘over the Pond’ nor disturbing the peace of the leafy lanes of Norfolk in his race-spec Austin-Healey 3000. This year the Erection XI numbered 20. Col Tony Taylor and Andrew Wolvin - RHQ; Capt Tam Steele, CSgt Glen Keeble, Cpl Michelle Stone, Ptes Mac McMurtry and Pte Phillip Gough - A Coy EER; Caretaker Nancy Barnard; Peter Cranfield, Maurice Eke, Paul Garman, John Gilbert, Gordon Hare, Alan Nichols, George Osborne, Geoff Ransome, John Raybould, Ivor Read, Ray Segon and David Shearwood - Norwich Branch. The oldest present was George Osborne, aged 88. On the Monday, Members cleared the Drill Hall.

REGIMENTAL ASSOCIATION CHAPEL SERVICE SUN 25 SEP 2005
The 2005 Association Service was held on Sun 25 Sep in the Warrior’s Chapel, Norwich Cathedral, conducted by the Revd Canon Bill Sayer. It took the form of a Commemoration Service to mark the 60th Anniversary of the end of WW2. He welcomed those present, especially the WW2 Veterans, and those younger who had their own memories of more recent service - ‘minor skirmishes’ in comparison - of the R Norfolks, Suffolk, East Anglian, Royal Anglian and Royal Navy.
After a reading by Gen John Sutherell CB CBE from Matthew 5 vv 1-12, an inspiring address was given by Canon Bill on the theme of ‘Gratitude and Compassion’. In view of the nature of the service, the Exhortation was read:
They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary the, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

During the playing of the National Anthem the 2 Standards were lowered, that of the Norwich Branch of the Royal Artillery Assocn borne by Stan Baines (Dunkirk, North Africa and D-Day) and of the Norwich Branch of the R Anglian Assocn by Ray Segon.
As ever, the service concluded with ‘Rule Britannia’ and ‘Speed the Plough’. The latter is not an easy piece to play but organist Julian Thomas literally pulled out all the stops and we were treated to an unparalleled feast, drawing many compliments.
Ushers John Gilbert and Alan Nichols took an unprecedented offering.
Afterwards, at the parade outside the Cathedral, General John spoke individually to all the 33 on parade. It was good to see so many London Branch Members present.

Thanks to the initiative of Ray Segon, The Regt again had a presence at the annual Commemoration Parade and Norwich Cathedral Service for Edith Cavell at Norwich Cathedral, on Sat 15 Oct. It was organised by the Norwich Combined Services.
Left, representing Norwich Branch,
Maurice Eke and Standard Bearer Ray Segon.
In Oct 1918 HM Queen Alexandra unveiled a memorial to Edith Cavell in Tombland, Norwich, opposite the Edith Cavell Nursing Home. The memorial is in the form of a bronze bust, mounted on a stone column. On 19 May 1919, after a memorial service in Westminster Abbey, the body of Edith Cavell was re-interred in Life’s Green in the precincts of Norwich Cathedral. (The place of burial is on the outside of The Regimental Chapel, otherwise known as St Saviour’s Chapel - a fittingly named resting place for a brave lady. Ed.)
