REGIMENTAL ANECDOTES
`Old soldiers never die, they just fade away’ may not be true but their priceless memories do fade away. The Late Maj Tom Styles contributed an unparalleled 24 unique pieces between 1995 and his untimely death in 2000.

With the passing of more Old Comrades it is increasingly evident that much Regimental anecdotal history is being lost. The facts and deeds are nobly recorded in worthy tomes but much of the human element, sayings, stories, emotions and opinions of events is often only recollected at Regimental gatherings. These reminiscences and the undocumented informal facets of military life need to be recorded. From pre-war, WW2 and especially the Far East, the Berlin blockade, Korea, Hong Kong, Cyprus, Aden and recent conflicts, please send them in.

'Do you like the latest issue pinny? asks WO2 Alec BarrREGIMENTAL ASSOCIATION CHAPEL SERVICE SUN 26 SEP 2004
While a photograph of the vital ‘Cups Chaps’, WO2 Alec Barr and Maurice Eke and one of Maj John Denny and CSM Bob Moy appeared in the print copy of B&C 103 Dec 04 (right), the Norfolk Editor failed to report the Sun 26 Sep 04 Service in the Warrior’s Chapel. The late Paul Boxall was remembered in a moving service conducted by The Revd Canon Bill Sayer who also gave the address, based on his D-Day 2004 visit to France. The lesson was read by Col Tony Taylor. Well attended, the average age of the ushers was halved by the presence of Maj David Clarke alongside Ray Segon! At every Chapel Service the playing of ‘Speed the Plough’ gets better. The rendition by Organ Scholar James Mooney-Dutton was just magnificent! (The Norfolk Editor can say that as former OC HQ (Sfk) Coy, 6 R Anglian!) It was good to see Mrs Peggy Hine present.

4 ROYAL NORFOLK OFFICERS' DINNER FRI 22 APRIL 2005
84 years after the first dinner in Feb 1921, the Annual Dinner was held at the Norfolk Club on Fri 22 April 2005. We again thank the Norfolk Club Secretary, Col Geoffrey Hardaker, the chef and staff for a most successful evening as well as Col Tony Taylor for riding shotgun with the Regimental Silver.
The following attended:
Richard Boulton, Derek Burdett, John Davidson, Gerry Gandon, Miles Green, Ron James, Chris Overton, Pat Palgrave-Moore, John Raybould, Paul Raywood, Jack Salter, David Spalding, Tony Taylor and Richard Watson.
Regrets were received from: Michael Ashton, Tom Eaton, Stephen Fradley, John Housego, Ted Riddell-Smith, Tam Steele, Alistair Stone and Bruce Warrington.
The Dinner Club Secretary wishes to record his thanks to Andrew Wolvin, RHQ Office, for the reproduction of the menu invitations. Maj Tom Eaton was unwell and for the first time in many years missed an excellent meal enjoyed by the 15 members. Col Paul Raywood TD DL presided. We stood in memory of 2 members who had died since the last dinner: Maj Tim Chatting and Vaughan Raywood. Maj Derek Burdett TD was heard to say to Maj Richard Boulton TD JP: ‘In 2 years I qualify in the B&C for the obe!’ (Click here for an explanation.) ‘When we served under Lt Col Tim Wilkins we were well preserved as we were so pickled!’
The ‘Presence Book’ is full so the Dinner Club Secretary has been instructed to purchase a new tome for the 2006 Dinner to be held on Fri 21 Apr. (Here as a reminder to the Norfolk Editor!)

4 ROYAL NORFOLK ASSOCIATION DINNER 30 APR 2005
24 attended on Sat 30 Apr 2005 at the Cliff Hotel, Gorleston, including some from A Coy, East of England Regt. In the absence of the President, Maj Tom Eaton OBE TD DL, Maj John Housego presided, recalling the recent deaths of Alfred Lang and Capt Ray Pillar. Pat Budds has become the new chairman. Regrets were received from several members, including Capt Mike Ashton and Keith Robson. Traditions continued: huge mounds of treacle pudding and the number of winning raffle prizes drawn by the former members of Thetford (2 Pl), A (Norfolk) Coy, 6 Royal Anglian. As ever, the very healthy Annual Accounts (no doubt having been prepared with customary ‘adjustments’) were presented by the Treasurer, ‘The Master’, Maj Fred Ayers TD. Capt Tam Steele, A Coy PSAO (Permanent Staff Admin Offr) gave an update on the Norwich TA Coy, many of whom were serving in Iraq, and the intended future restructuring and re-naming of the EER (East of England Regt) and recall of the historic use of ‘4th’ for a TA Bn, when 4 R Anglian are formed. (‘Re-formed’ is perhaps a better word as 4 R Anglian were successors to the Leics Regt. They were reduced to Tiger Coy and disbanded in 1976.)

REGIMENTAL ALMANZA SERVICE SUN 24 APR 2005
The 2005 Almanza Service was held on Sun 24 April in the Warrior’s Chapel in Norwich Cathedral, conducted by the Revd Canon Bill Sayer. 2 very senior Cathedral clergy made brief appearances. The new Dean, The Very Revd Graham Smith, introduced himself and said he hoped we would be back in our own Regimental Chapel ere long! Later, a purple-clad figure, with staff, appeared from behind the triptych and silently crept along the side aisle, not stopping!
We stood in memory of Regimental colleagues who had died since the Sep 04 service, particularly Majors Tim Chatting and Douglas Sayer MBE TD. Tim’s family were welcomed. Canon Bill recalled 2 comments from Tim. ‘You, Sir, should be a Regular Army Chaplain.’
‘He was the CSM, so I obeyed!’
Later: ‘You, Sir, were the worst officer I ever saw!’
After a reading by Gen John Sutherell CB CBE from Romans 13 v 1-6, an inspiring address was given by The Revd Canon Dennis Rider. Introduced by Canon Bill, who had known him for 40 years in Norfolk. He had served with REME as a National Serviceman then in Buxton, Gaywood and Dereham as a clergyman. Canon
Dennis reminded us that the Almanza weekend also marked Gaza and Gallipoli.
Mrs Janine Raybould was disappointed the orange lilies in her magnificent altar floral arrangements had not opened so the Norfolk Editor was forbidden to photograph them! ‘Speed the Plough’ is not an easy piece to play but organist Julian Thomas literally pulled out all the stops and we were treated to an unparalleled feast. WO2 Alec Barr behaved himself this time and wasn’t spotted giving his pew neighbour a dig in the ribs as the organist played. It was good to see a Norfolk legend present, pictured near right with Maj John Denny: WO2 Alf Cooke, CSM ‘D’ Coy 90 ((86 on 15 Dec 05). Called up at 20 in 1940 he served the R Norfolk Regt until 1962. We thank Mrs Jan Taylor who served refreshments in the Prior’s Hall after the service and the washers and dryers up: Geoff Ransome, Ray Segon and Alec Barr, pictured far right.

F COY WARMS MAY DAY WEEKEND 2005
WALKING AND ROAD MARCHING SECTION
The Home Service Force (HSF) was formed in 1982. A (Royal Norfolk) Coy, 6 R ANGLIAN, of which the Norfolk Editor was OC, based in the TA Centre in Aylsham Rd, Norwich, were honoured to be one of the pilot host units. The late Maj David Standley was its first OC. F Coy was regrettably only in existence for 10 years but its members formed a thriving association. Activities arranged for 2005 include walks, hence the title WARMS, and a visit to France on the May Day weekend. It was hoped a report would be available - no doubt including who heard former OC, Maj Ron James TD CS DC, Late The Rocking Horse Rangers, bang on the bar with a sponge calling for attention from those who wished him to buy them a round! (We belatedly congratulate Ron and Marilyn on their 2004 wedding.)
For details of WARMS activities, contact the Secretary: Tony Watson, via the Norfolk Section Editor or RHQ, Britannia House, TA Centre, 325 Aylsham Rd, Norwich, NR3 2AB. Tel 01603 400290.
