3 (V) BN NORFOLK REGT Trudie Kerr wrote concerning her great grandfather, George Eaton Kerr. “I have a letter, dated 1 Feb 1901 or 02 (writing is a little unclear!) written by what looks like ‘Lt Col S Cresswell MVO, Commanding Lynn Detachment, 3 (V) Bn Norfolk Regiment.’ It is a testimonial to my great grandfather, George Eaton Kerr who (to quote the letter) ‘served in the 3rd Bn for many years.’ For a considerable time he was a Cpl in A Coy. Is there any way of finding any details of his service with the Regiment ? George was born 8 Aug 1858, I believe in Leicestershire, and died in 1913 in Peterborough. He was engaged as an engineer, in various positions throughout his life, arriving in King’s Lynn somewhere between 1871 & 1881. He was a bicycle maker in 1881 but was working on torpedo design at the time of his death. George married in 1894 but his wife died in 1899 leaving him with a young son, which may have been the reason for leaving the Regiment. His son, Frank Millis Kerr, married the daughter of a Royal Artillery driver who had served in the 2nd Afghanistan War and I have that campaign medal - but nothing to indicate what George’s military life may have involved.” Trudie was advised to peruse: ‘Seeking Old Comrades and Service Details ?’ on the B&C site and contact Kate Thaxton 01603 223649 kate.thaxton.mus@norfolk.gov.uk Can anyone help Trudie ? CARLTON COLVILLE
CHRONICLES Susanne Foxley wrote: “I'm searching for a copy of the ‘Carlton Colville Chronicles’ written by Canon Reginald Augustus Bignold, Rector of Lowestoft. Searching the internet I came across the name Pte Herbert James Roe on your Norfolk Section website. It mentions the ‘Carlton Colville Chronicles’ the very book I seek. My grandfather and his brothers are mentioned in it as they visited the Canon on the evening of their departure. Do any of your readers have a spare copy of this book they would be prepared to sell?” Can anyone assist? [B&C 107] |
